SQL Server Express 2008/2012 are available as a 64-bit application. SQL Server Express 2005 has a 4GB limit on database size, while 2008/2012/2014 support a 10GB limit on database size.
Example Installation Steps
SQL Server Express Downloads
You should download and install both SQL Server Express and SQL Server Management Studio Express. This may be bundled as “tools” with a single install depending on the version of SQL Server Express. Management Studio is not required, but can aid in the management of SQL Server and may be necessary for support.
After the installation, the ‘SQL Server Browse’ Service may be disabled. This prevents TopView from automatically seeing SQL Server Express on the machine when you are configuring SQL Server (Global Options in the TopView Configurator). After the SQL Server Express installation, use the Windows Control Panel Services applet to (1) enable the Service, (2) set the startup mode to ‘Automatic’, (3) start the Service
